DescriptionThis poster shows a group of marines disembarking a landing craft just before battle, and was an attempt to promote productivity in factories. Ship construction was a major concern during World War II and a common theme in propaganda posters. Civilians were encouraged to exceed their factory schedules and were as responsible for the war effort as servicemen.HistoryThe demand put on American industries during World War II was immense as over ten million men were away at war. Between 1941 and 1945 production in the United States reached a tremendous level with industry producing over 300,000 planes, 124,000 ships, and millions of other vehicles. Production posters emphasised the equal responsibility of soldiers and factory workers and always stressed the need for workers to meet their target schedules. SignificanceThis example indicates the pressure on factory workers to meet targets during the war and how posters attempted to motivate people.
