DescriptionA Long Service and Good Conduct Medal awarded to John Lang, Leading Stoker 1st Class of the Royal Navy Australia Station cruiser HMS KATOOMBA. This circular medal with a bar and blue and white ribbon attached, features an inscription reading 'For Long Service and Good Conduct' and a broadside view of the starboard side of an unidentified ship in rope border. On the reverse side is an inscription reading 'Victoria Regina' featuring Queen Victoria's profile in relief. An engraved inscription around the rim reads 'John Lang, Lg. Sto. 1Cl., HMS. KATOOMBA.'HistoryHMS KATOOMBA was a Pearl-class cruiser built for the Royal Navy by Armstrong Whitworth, Elswick, Tyne and Wear and launched on 27 August 1889. It was orginally named PANDORA but renamed KATOOMBA on 2 April 1890 and assigned as the flagship of the Auxiliary Squadron of the Australia Station. Along with the rest of the Auxillary Squadron, KATOOMBA arrived in Sydney on 5 September 1891. She remained part of the Australia Station until 16 January 1906 and then sold for scrap on 10 July 1906. The Long Service & Good Conduct Medal is awarded by the British Government to members of the British Armed Forces who have completed 15 years of reckonable service. It was established in 1830.SignificanceThis Long Service and Good Conduct Medal reflects the service of the Australian Auxiliary Squadron of the Royal Navy on the Australia Station at the end of the nineteenth century and is part of the long story of Naval discipline and tradition.
