DescriptionThis waterline model shows the three-masted and fully rigged DERWENT and was built by the ship's carpenter Mr Brann whilst he was on board the vessel.HistoryFrom the latter half of the 16th century reasonably accurate scale models of vessels were being constructed and used as three dimensional plans by shipwrights. Marine model making has continued to the present day with models being made for a variety of reasons including - ceremonial, presentation, advertising, ship design, decoration, archaeological reconstruction, leisure and educational. DERWENT was an iron three-masted fully rigged ship built in 1884 by Macmillan and Son at Dumbartron, Scotland for Devitt & Moore. DERWENT operated for the Devitt & Moore Shipping Company. In 1904 it was sold to the Norwegian charter Nielson & Co. It was sold once more in 1926 in the USA and broken up in 1949. In 1884 DERWENT was one of the first ships to be fitted with steel topgallant yards. The DERWENT was loaded with general cargo in England for Australia and wool for European markets on the return journey.SignificanceThis ship model is representative of sailor-made ship models and shows in detail the sailing ship DERWENT.
