DescriptionA black and white image of the docks of the port of Marseille, France, titled '9. Marseille - La Joliette' produced by 'Edition C Marlière Marseille'. Train carriages and trams run along right side with assorted goods and cargo awaiting movement to and from the ships. Large groups of unidentified merchant vessels are visible in the background. Inscription at the upper left reads "June 27th We arrive Gibraltar today but cannot land [?]'. Two post marks stamped verso, possibly date from 1920. Hand written inscription at reverse reads "Mr James Driver P&O 125 East London South Africa". HistoryLa Joliette is a neighbourhood of the port city of Marseille. The Old Port of Marseille was replaced by the port at La Joliette as the main port for trade during the Second Empire (1852 to 1870), primarily to accommodate the growing number of steam ships.SignificanceMarseille, the second largest city in France and once celebrated as 'the port of the empire", was commercially and militarily significant to the growth and protection of France.
