DescriptionA photograph album compiled by Alan Rice containing various photographs of sailing ships. The album comprised of 50 sheets featuring 76 black and white prints and five coloured prints. Most vessels described were Australian built or had sailed in Australian waters.HistoryMr Rice assembled the bulk of this collection between 1974 and 1989 while he was a merchant seaman in the Australian coastal trade. There is a wide range of records: correspondence, diaries, logbooks, manifests, reports, specifications, certificates, passenger tickets, menus, receipts, photographs, charts, plans, news clippings, stationery, souvenirs, drawings, posters, calendars, booklets, serials, tourist publications. The greatest value of the archival component of the Rice Collection lies in the scope and breadth of material relating to the Australian coastal shipping industry, an industry which flourished in the nineteenth century and slowly died in the mid twentieth century. Much of this material relates to company activities, particularly those of the Adelaide Steamship Company. SignificanceThis photograph album is part of the Rice collection, a large and diverse collection of archival material and artefacts relating, mostly, to Australian coastal shipping and is strongest for the Adelaide region.
