DescriptionThis soup bowl features the William Holyman and Sons Pty Ltd crest and a red house flag. William Holyman and Sons was a passenger and cargo carrier company.HistoryWilliam Holyman (1833 - 1919) was born in Lincolnshire, England. After undertaking training for maritime service at Trinity House School, Holyman began an apprenticeship in 1847 on a coastal ship trading out of Hull. In 1854 he sailed to Launceston on the barque ELIZABETH RATCLIFFE and left the ship. Holyman settled in Devonport, Tasmania and in 1871 purchased the paddle-steamer ANNIE, marking the establishment of Holyman's company, William Holyman & Sons. Holyman's three sons qualified as master mariners and commanded ships which were added to the company fleet. In 1882 the company registered their fleet as the White Star Line. In 1890, the company operated a passenger cargo steamer for Bass Strait, including Flinders Island.
