DescriptionThis white porcelain coffee mug was produced for the oil tanker AMANDA MILLER. Built in 1971 for R. W. Miller and Co., a coal shipping company, AMANDA MILLER was the largest tanker built in Australia at that time.HistoryThe AMANDA MILLER was a 39,059 tonne oil tanker built by the Whyalla Shipbuilding and Engineering works division of BHP Ltd at Whyalla, South Australia in 1971 for R. W. Miller and Co. While under construction a fire destroyed the partially completed hull, with damages estimated at three million dollars. After being rebuilt, AMANDA MILLER was launched in February 1971 and operated her first cargo of crude oil in September 1971. In 1987 the vessel was sold to the Revay shipping group and renamed AMITY STAR. SignificanceThis souvenir coffee cup highlights the history of the Australian coal shipping company, R. W. Miller and Co.
