DescriptionThis poster promoting Aberdeen Line services to South Africa and Australia was designed by the British artist Charles Dixon in 1924. Featuring the liner MS EURIPIDES, the poster reflects the transition between traditional ship portrait compositions popular in the early 20th century and later Modernist inspired designs.HistoryBuilt by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, MS EURIPIDES made its maiden voyage to Australia in July 1914. Arriving in Brisbane in August the vessel was requisitioned by the Australian Government as a troop carrier. In June 1917 the vessel came under the control of the British government and continued as a troopship before being handed back to the Aberdeen Line in 1919. EURIPIDES operated a passenger service from London to Australia between 1920 and 1929 when the Aberdeen Line ceased operation. The vessel came under the control of the White Star Line and in 1932 was acquired by the Shaw Savill Line and renamed AKAROA.SignificanceThe poster is representative of designs produced by Charles Dixon in the 1920s. It is also an important document recording one of the ways in which travel was marketed to both national and international audiences.
