DescriptionA black and white engraving from the Town and Country Journal of 29 January, 1876. It is titled 'View of Manly Beach - "The Pier"' and shows visitors strolling on the wharf with the Pier Family Hotel in the background. A boatshed to the right advertises boats for hire by B. Skinner, a long time Manly resident known as 'Old Ben' and one of the earliest boatmen in Manly before ferries were available. HistoryBy the 1870's Manly, north of Sydney, had become one of the most popular leisure locations on the coast. Its close proximity to Sydney and the attractions of both a surf beach and a tranquil harbour beach, saw thousands of Sydneysiders descend upon its shores weekly. As its popularity grew, so did its facilities to cater for the crowds, and not unlike today, there was a focus on refreshments and public transport. "The hotel is surrounded by spacious balconies, which afford splendid views of the harbour and the adjacent coasts; and, though distant only about 400 yards from the outer beach, fronting the Pacific Ocean, is well sheltered, and it is as much from this, as from its close proximity to the pier or landing place within the harbour, that it has become the most popular resort of people visiting Sydney from the country, as well as of those engaged in business in the city. A pavilion attached to the hotel, and formerly used for amusements, has by the present proprietor been turned into a commodious dining-room for use on special occasions, where upwards of 200 persons may be accommodated. The fast steamers that run between Sydney and Manly almost hourly provide rapid and easy communication, and as the telegraph line is now opened to Manly, there is every facility for immediate intercourse with the city".SignificanceIn addition to its natural beauty and proximity to Sydney, Manly grew to become a leisure spot - modelled on resort towns such as Brighton. Complete with hotels, tea houses, baths and an aquarium, Manly ensured it offered something for everyone.
