The label on the body of the bottle reads 'Essence of Peppermint dose. - As a Carminative, 10 to 30 drops in water,- 20 to 30 drops to half a pint of water froms cordial peppermint water. Dakin Brothers, Wholesale & Export Druggists, 2 & 3, Cree Church Lane, Leadenhall St., London. E.C.'HistoryEssence of Peppermint, first patented in 1762, was a useful addition in seafaring medical chests. Not only was it helpful i9n in flavouring 'unpalatable' medicines such as castor oil, it was also seen as beneficial for alleviating the effects of nausea, headaches, toothaches, cold and flu and a general soothing agent for 'disorders'. And much like today, the vapours of peppermint, when heated, provided a pleasant odour which was much needed aboard the confines of a ship.SignificanceThe chest represents the changing role of officers who served in the Merchant Marine during the mid to late 19th century. There was no requirement for a surgeon to be on board, so commissioned officers were responsible for performing minor medical tasks. In the case of the BURRUMBEET, the pharmaceuticals were weighed and administered by the Chief Engineer, the original owner of the chest.
