DescriptionToy model of HMAS SYDNEY (I) in original packing. Cardboard box with a separate lid, inscription on lid reads 'The Australian Cruiser SYDNEY, unsinkable, not made in Germany (like SMS EMDEN). Made in Japan' HistoryThis toy boat was clearly designed as a tool of wartime propoganda given that it describes the model as 'Not made in Germany (Like the EMDEN).' It was also commonplace at this time for all items marketed as 'Made in Germany' to be judged by Allied countries as being inferior to their own products.SignificanceThis item is very useful both as an example of the quality of toys produced in Australia during the First World War and as a peripheral artefact and source in the history of naval warfare during that conflict. It is a clear indicator of the pride Australians took in the success of their first major naval engagement and of the prejudice that existed in Australia with regard to German-made goods (military or otherwise).
