DescriptionA menu printed on a fan for a Chinese dinner on board the China Navigation Company liner MS TAIYUAN.HistoryMS TAIYUAN was built as a passenger-cargo liner for the China Navigation Company in 1949. It offered a high standard of passenger comfort and facilities, including air conditioning in public areas such as the lounge, bar, shop, hairdresser and all cabins on the upper deck. The vessel's general route was Melbourne to Hobart, Sydney, Brisbane, Manila, Hong Kong, Keelung, Naha, Pusan, and then ports in Japan including Yokohama, before returning to Melbourne. SignificanceShip menus became important souvenirs for passengers travelling on board. They were often signed by other passengers and usually featured decorative covers and were mementos of the elaborate meals served.
