DescriptionAn etching by Graham Marchant titled 'Balls Head' from a series titled 'Paintings from the Peninsula'. Print number 6/25, signed by artist lower right beneath image. HistoryBalls Head is located on Sydney Harbour. The traditional owners of the land were the Cammeraygal people who knew the area as Yerroulbine. After the early 20th century the headland was managed by the Australian Army until 1926 when it became a designated nature reserve. This study by Graham Marchant was part of an exhibition held in Balmain in 1988 titled 'Paintings from the Peninsula'. Marchant says of his work: "My oeuvre is based on the close searching observation of the object and the natural world. I have a particular interest in organised spaces, gardens and in pattern. The images are determined by the locations I choose, the still lives I construct and the interplay of light. These issues are demonstrated by my preoccupation with the interaction between the interior to the exterior..." SignificanceBalls Head holds a prominent position on the harbour, overlooking the maritime trade that occurs there daily. It is a relatively undeveloped area and retains much of the natural beauty of pre-colonial Sydney.
