DescriptionPainting of shipping in Newcastle Harbour featuring a paddle steamer with Nobby's Lighthouse and breakwater in the background.HistoryKnown as Mulubinba to the traditional owners of the land, Newcastle and its deep water harbour on Australia's east coast, grew to become a thriving port after European discovery in 1797. The safe harbour's access to the inland Hunter River region proved profitable to settlers and exporters of wool, timber and was the site of Australia's first coal export. Access by coastal steamers and paddle steamers meant the commute to Sydney was manageable and its shows became utilised for heavy industry, particularly during and after WWII. With Nobby's Lighthouse still operational, the third to be built in New South Wales, Newcastle continues to be the busiest port on the east coast. SignificanceAlthough we know little of the artist of this painting, they have captured the business of Newcastle Harbour and the wide variety of vessels that utilised the waterways and facilities of the port.
