DescriptionThis late 1960s surfboard was fabricated from a foam blank and fiberglass. It features a round bottom, a single orange coloured fin and an orange stringer, and was modified in 1987 to accommodate a leg rope. The top of the surfboard bears the text 'Wayne Lynch Involvment Surfboards, 142 Gawler Place, Adelaide, Sth Australia'. Wayne Lynch was a Victorian short board rider, who won junior championships from 1967 to 1970. He worked as a shaper at the John Arnold factory in South Australia, producing the Involvment model which sold Australia-wide.HistoryThis Involvment board, characterised by its rounded pins and full outline, was purchased by Grant Brecht around 1970 at John Arnold's Surf Shop in Adelaide. He was informed by the surf shop that the board had been sold to them by Wayne Lynch. Wayne Lynch's name appears on the foam blank as well as on the business sticker which is adhered to the fiberglass. The board is unusual in having an orange stringer, as Lynch's boards almost always had stringers in blends of blue and green.SignificanceThe rounded bottom of this Involvment board is historically significant in indicating the attention which began to be given to the design of the bottom of surf boards from the late 1960s.
