DescriptionThe book contains five manuscript logbooks kept by midshipman Hugh Fitzroy Hopkinson on the various ships he served on. The beginning of each log (except for the CALLIOPE) has an elaborate hand decorated title page. Throughout the volume there are diagrams, landscapes, charts and maps in pencil, ink, watercolour and other mediums by the author. The log entries are dated between 9th August 1886 and 3rd April 1889. The log book of the CALLIOPE covers the hurricane at Apia.HistoryMidshipman (later Captain) Hugh Fitzroy Hopkinson was born 11th October, 1871 and died 5th June 1922. He joined the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1884 and promoted from sub lieutenant to lieutenant in 1893.
In 1894, Hugh Hopkinson was Lieutenant on HMS PYGMY and later granted Portuguese Military Order of Avis (1918) and Portuguese Order of Christ (1919) for services rendered in transporting the Portuguese Army from Lisbon to Brest during 1917.
SignificanceThis log book by young midshipman Hugh Fitzroy Hopkinson is significant in capturing the skills required for a midshipman in the Royal Navy such as mapping, charts and general recordings, but also for hand drawn depictions of Apia following the disaster of 1889.
