DescriptionPostcard depicting USS CONNECTICUT. This postcard was printed as a commemorative greeting to Australia's American friends. During the visit of the Great White Fleet on its world wide tour in 1908 postcards were a popular and cheap souvenir. They typically depict America and Australia as allies and friends.HistoryIn 1907 American President Roosevelt ordered the Atlantic Battle Fleet of the US Navy on an ambitious voyage around the world. In December 1907 led by the flagship CONNECTICUT, the Atlantic Fleet consisted of 16 battleships painted white as were all US Navy ships in times of peace. The fleet sailed in four divisions of four ships each visiting six continents, 26 countries and 32 ports. It carried 614 officers, 13,504 other crew and consumed 435,000 tons of coal, more than any other naval expedition. It was the largest fleet to ever accomplish a circumnavigation. The visit stimulated a varied and colourful range of souvenirs. Badges, medallions, pins, postcards and photographs all reflected the euphoria generated by the visit of a potential new and powerful ally. The souvenirs typically represent America and Australia as cooperative partners and commonly depict national motifs including flags, emblems and banners.SignificanceThis photograph is representative of the souvenirs of the American Great White Fleet visit in 1908 and the mutually beneficial relationship between America and Australia, beginning to form in the early 20th century. Postcards became the most common and popular souvenir made to mark the momentous occasion.
