DescriptionA colour postcard showing an illustration of the Australasian United Steam Navigation Company steamship SUVA.HistorySS SUVA was a 2229-ton passenger-cargo steamer built by Workman, Clark and Co. in Belfast for the Australasian United Steam Navigation (AUSN) Co. Ltd. SUVA was built for the passenger/cargo service between Fiji and Sydney, which became known as the 'banana boat run’, she was also employed in the Queensland coastal trade.
SS SUVA was requisitioned in 1915 by the Royal Navy. It was adapted into an auxiliary cruiser at Garden Island, Sydney and served for almost three years in the Red Sea.
SignificanceAs industry and trade expanded up and down the east coast, steamers to service the regions and inland river ways grew in demand. Companies such as the Australasian United Steam Navigation Co. were vital to keep waterways accessible to the coastal centres.
