HistoryLucien Bonaparte Wise (Wyse) [1845 - 1909] carried out studies to prove that a canal through Panama would be viable and obtained a concession from the Columbian Government to built it on behalf of the Compagnie universelle du canal interocéanique de Panama. After the failure of this scheme he wrote his memoirs intending to prove to investors that the project was still viable.
