DescriptionA book titled 'A Visit to the Antipodes, With Some Reminiscences of a Sojourn in Australia by a Squatter'. Published in London by Smith, Elder & Co., 1846.HistoryThis book by 'E.L.' was one of many accounts of Australian colonies in the early half of the C19th. The author devotes the first part of the book to the "voyage out with a view to circulation amongst his immediate friends" but decides to publish his reminiscences on return to London. Of note in this book, rather than being an emigrant guide which tended to promote or exaggerate the successes of a colony, this account does not shy away from the fairly big problems the young colony of Adelaide was facing at the time. Both social and financial and how potential immigrants need to be aware. The author also addresses at length the terrible injustices he saw facing the First Nation population in the area and how colonisation had failed them completely.
