DescriptionMade in Australia by Cartis, this green two piece swimsuit features a baby doll top decorated with a fabric bow, an open slit back and shirred elasticised shoulder straps. Using a machine-knitted synthetic fabric textured with cables and cut-outs, the swimsuit incorporates an inbuilt bra and an elasticised band below the bust that fastens at the back with a clear plastic button. The bikini briefs have an elasticised waist and are lined with cotton stockinette.HistoryIn the 1950s and early 1960s swimsuits and sunsuits were often shaped with panelling and in-built supports to create a curvaceous, ultra-feminine silhouette that emphasised the bust, waistline and hips.
As the 1960s progressed swimsuits became less structured and designs became more focused on comfort using new synthetics such as nylon that were quick drying and self supporting.
SignificanceThis two piece swimsuit is representative of Australian made designs worn during the 1950s and 1960s.
