DescriptionThis red ensign flag, with British flag on the top left-hand corner, is part of the exciting story of Sydney's open boats, in particular the renowned 18-footers. It was the sail ensign of the 18 foot racing skiff BRITANNIA, one of the last remaining traditional 18s. Built by George Robinson in Balmain in 1918, BRITANNIA sailed with the Sydney Flying Squadron and later with the New South Wales 18 Foot Sailing league. George Robinson skippered the skiff with a crew of up to 10-12 and raced between 1919 and 1945, with a brief retirement during the Great Depression, winning 41 titles and cup races throughout its racing career.
