DescriptionLifebuoy from the P&O passenger liner ARCADIA, one of the company's cruise liners built in 1953 when cruising resumed post war.
Launched at John Brown & Company, Clydebank in Scotland on 14 May 1953, the ship sailed to Fremantle Australia on its maiden voyage from Tilbury, UK via the Suez Canal in February 1954. P&O Cruises first permanent ship was HIMALAYA followed by the ARCADIA, ORCADES, SEA PRINCESS, ORIANA, FAIRSTAR, FAIR PRINCESS and PACIFIC SKY.
ARCADIA was refitted in 1959, and again in 1970, as it continued cruising between Europe and Australia, across the Pacific via the Panama Canal, and along the west coast of America to Alaska and Mexico. In 1975 ARCADIA moved its base to Australia (replacing the HIMALAYA) and cruised Asia-Pacific routes until it was scrapped in Taiwan in 1979.
