DescriptionWatercolour titled 'RMS OROYA' depicting the Orient Line steamship OROYA at sea. The vessel was part of the Orient Steam Navigation Company Line and served as the Royal Mail Steamer on the Australian route 1887 - 1909.HistoryThe OROYA was built by the Barrow Shipbuilding Co in 1886 for the Pacific Steam Navigation Co. She had her maiden voyage in 1887 travelling between London - Suez - Melbourne and Sydney for the Orient Line service. In March 1895 she went aground in the Bay of Naples and was severely damaged. Once repaired she was transferred to Royal Mail Steam Packet Co ownership and continued on the Australia service until commencing her last voyage in April 1909. The OROYA was scrapped at Genoa later that year.SignificanceThe OROYA was built by the Orient Steam Navigation Company Line for its Australian service.
