DescriptionA gouache and watercolour painting of the SS SOUTH AUSTRALIAN. This painting is attributed to the Italian school, after A de Simone, it was previously attributed to G F Gregory Junior.HistoryThe SS SOUTH AUSTRALIAN was built in 1876 for the Adelaide Steamship Company. It was later sold to A Seddon in 1898; with Seddon then selling on the vessel to the Mutual Shipping Company in 1909. The vessel was then converted to a hulk in 1909.
SignificanceThis painting was part of the Cowdroy collection of ship portraits whose collection began at the time of the sinking of the DUNBAR in Sydney. One Cowdry family member was the harbour master at the time of the accident and since the event the family continued to collected oil and watercolours relating to maritime Australia.
