DescriptionWWI military service exemption certificate issued by the RAN and the Commonwealth Naval Dockyard, Cockatoo Island, to Wesley Arthur Stanley. Typed on RAN letterhead the text begins 'Commonwealth Naval Dockyard, Cockatoo Island, Sydney. Exemption Certificate. This is to certify that the services of W. A. Stanley...'.HistoryThis photograph is part of collection of papers belonging to Wesley Arthur Stanley who was a draughtsman Cockatoo Island Dockyard between 1908 - 1950's. Stanley began his career at Cockatoo Island as an apprentice turner and fitter in 1909. He completed his apprenticeship on 06 June 1914 and began working as a junior draftsman by September of that year. When the Australian Government closed down its operations at Cockatoo Island in 1933, Stanley was retrenched. He was quickly re-employed by the company that took over the shipyard, Cockatoo Dock and Engineering Co. and continued to work there until the 1950's.SignificanceThis series of photographs document the history of one of Australia's most important dockyards and the type of work carried out by dockyard staff.
