DescriptionDinner menu from SS OTRANTO, Sunday 11 November 1956.
Being the last of the six menu cards of the 'Queens of England' series, the front cover has a colour illustration of Queen Elizabeth II of House of Windsor. A segment of the Queen's Christmas Day broadcast of 1952 is printed on the reverse.HistoryOTRANTO was launched on 9 July 1925. The ship was requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1939 and converted for use as a troop ship and later in 1942 as a landing ship, infantry in support of the invasions of French North Africa (Operation Torch), Sicily (Operation Husky) and Italy (Operation Avalanche). It was released from government service in 1948.
OTRANTO resumed service as a passenger liner, now capable of carrying 1,412 tourist-class passengers. It made it's last voyage, from the UK to Sydney, Australia via Cape Town, South Africa, in February 1957 and was sold for scrap in June.
