DescriptionThese two documents relate to transport services provided to the brewing firm of Tooth & Co by Ferryboat Advertising Co. They consist of one invoice from and one cheque made out to Ferrbyboat Advertising Co for advertising steamboats. Both documents are dated 1921.HistoryTooth & Co Ltd was established in 1835 by John Tooth and his brother-in-law John Newham who opened a brewery in Sydney called the Kent Brewery. Tooth & Co Ltd became the major brewer of beer in New South Wales and was incorporated in New South Wales in 1888. Tooth & Co Ltd expanded by acquiring the Rechs Waverley Brewery in Sydney in 1921 as well a number of other hotels and land, including the New South Wales franchise of Hungry Jacks. In the 1930s, Tooth & Co Ltd embarked on a marketing campaign to give its pubs a modern image. Amongst other steps, this involved decorating pubs with paintings to advertise the beer. The paintings typically showed men at work or playing sport and included references to local industries or sports. Tooth & Co Ltd was listed on the Sydney Stock Exchange in 1961 and acquired by Carlton & United Breweries in 1983.SignificanceThis collection provides an insight into wharfage services which operated at a time when shipping was the major means of freight and transport around Australia.
