HistoryAikten, Liburn & Co. formed the Glasgow Shipping Company in 1870 for the Scotland to Australia route, in particular servicing Melbourne. Aikten, Liburn & Co. formed a second company - General Shipping Company - to serve Sydney. Over time both companies and routes merged. Goods and passengers would be loaded in Glasgow, the clipper would then sail to Adelaide, from there to Melbourne and Sydney to load cargo for London. The ships would usually manage one trip to Australia per year. The company always used sailing ships, which in the end could not compete with steamships especially in the passenger trade. From 1900 it was always running at a loss, in 1911 it sold the last of its ships.
