HistorySouth Western Hotel was given its name when it was acquired in 1871 by the London and South Western Railway Company. The passenger liner is either the P&O Line SS AUSTRALIA (3,664 tons) built in 1870 and sold and renamed in 1889, or the P&O Line SS AUSTRALIA (6,901 tons) built in 1892 which became stranded at the entrance to Port Philip Bay in 1904 and was declared a total loss.
