DescriptionThis archive series numbered [001] - [080] consists of material relating to Dave Porter as skipper of the 18-foot yacht KB in the 1970s. It includes a scrapbook; racing itinerary, program and five newsletters of the Sydney Flying Squadron; two newsletters of the NSW 18-foot Sailing League; two souvenir programs; and 68 newspaper clippings documenting Dave Porter as skipper of KB.HistoryDave Porter, New South Wales, Australian and world champion skipper was approached by Tom Faulkner, ex - Chair of Tooths to develop a skiff for Tooths to sponsor. In 1972 Dave Porter commissioned New Zealander Bruce Farr to design an 18-foot racing skiff.
Bob McCloud of Brookvale built the skiff KB from Farr's plans. KB was built to race in the 1972 - 1973 18-foot skiff world title races on Sydney Harbour and took out a place. In the same year KB won the New South Wales and national titles. Dave Porter rigged and skippered KB. Other crew were Bob Tearne and Bob Ferris. It was the first of four KB vessels to be constructed and raced in the 1970s.SignificanceIn the mid 1970s the sport of 18-foot skiff sailing had become dominated by technical striving to be the lightest and fastest, financed by corporate sponsors. The building and campaigning of several boats, all named KB, sponsored by the Tooth's brewing company reveals this change.
