DescriptionThese four documents were collected by Captain Frank Leslie and relate to the Merchant Service Guild of Australasia of which he was a member. They consist of one membership application form; two letters sent to the guild regarding accident and sickness policy; and one Merchants' service policy from The Australian Provincial Assurance Association Limited. The documents span the period c1910 – 1924.HistoryThe Merchant Service Guild of Australia was first known as the Mercantile Marine Officers' Association. A General Meeting of members held on 12 February 1904 agreed to adopt the name Merchant Service Guild of Australasia. The Guild was registered under the Commonwealth Conciliation & Arbitration Act of 1904 on 5 May 1905. It was the first employee organisation to be registered under this act. On 3 September 1957 the name of the union was changed slightly to the Merchant Service Guild of Australia and in 1992 it merged with the Australian Stevedoring Supervisors' Association to form the Australian Maritime Officers' Union (AMOU). Membership to the AMOU covers mariners as well as administrative, technical, professional and supervisory employees in the maritime industry and related services.
