DescriptionThis archives series numbered [001] - [038] consists of material relating to Victorian yachtsman George Garrard and his deep-keeled, first class racing yacht SAYONARA. It includes 16 photographs, an album of yachting snapshots (depicting ALEXA, THISTLE and RIP), an album of newspaper cuttings, a book, magazine, 15 yacht plans drawn by Garrard and three design drawings of Sayonara, and fitting and fixtures - from William Fife and Sons of Fairlie.HistoryGeorge Garrard was a yachtsman from Carlton, South Yarra, Melbourne. He was the owner of SAYONARA when he joined Brighton Yacht Club. Garrard also owned the yacht AWANUI. He was an active member of the Royal Yacht club of Victoria. SAYONARA was designed in Scotland by William Fife III, and built by Alick MacFarlane. The Sayonara Cup was established to build on the intercolonial matches of the 1880s in Australia. The races were arranged by the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria and pitted the states of New South Wales and Victoria against one other.SignificanceThis collection documents the life of George Garrard and his yacht SAYONARA. It provides an insight into colonial yachting by acknowledging its sailors, owners, builders and related competitions in the first class yachting milieu.
