Artist Info
Commander Herbert Gordon Whitebrook1907 - 1995

Commander Herbert Gordon Whitebrook (RANR). This collection is significant as it reveals the experience of one soldier during World War II.

Commander Whitebrook was the first Royal Australian Naval reserve officer to be given command of a RAN vessel, HMAS GLENELG. The series conveys Whitebrook's experiences of the surrender of the Japanese second army in Ambon to Australian forces, and of the repatriation of Australian prisoners of war (the survivors of Gull Force). The collective images provide a rare personal glimpse into the darker side of Australia's involvement in the war in the Pacific.
