Jeff Carter

BiographyBorn in 1928, Jeff Carter became a freelance photographer in 1954, selling to magazines and journals such as Walkabout, Pix, People, The Australian Women's Weekly, Pertinent, Woman's Day, Modern Motor, Weekend, Man, Wheels, Today, Picture Post, Life, Epoca, Merian, Paris-Match, Stern, Esquire, and National Geographic.

He began his career in rural Australia, photographing farmhands, drovers, shearers, and miners. He travelled to Ulladulla, New South Wales in 1959-1960 and photographed members of the Sicilian fishing community in action. Some of his subjects were postwar migrants; others were born and raised in Australia. He wrote two articles for 'People' magazine accompanied with this photographs and highlighted the prejudice Italians often endured. In many ways, his photographs provided an intimate glimpse into their hard work ethic and strong sense of community and tradition.

Carter later published 'Surf Beaches of Australia's East Coast' in 1968. Throughout his career Carter has produced photographs that explore the progression of events over time. Concentrating on rituals, they comprise evocative images that are candid rather than posed, almost always taken using natural light.
