Jon Reid

BiographyFollowing completion of his Higher School Certificate in 1998, Jon applied for a cadetship in photography with Nationwide News Ltd. After working for several months as a copyboy, he started the cadetship on The Daily Telegraph and The Australian newspapers and consequently was enrolled in the Sydney Technical College Certificate in Photography. He resigned from News Ltd, having completed his course and cadetship to sail a yacht from Acapulco, Mexico across the Pacific Ocean to Sydney.

In 2002, Reid accepted an offer of full time employment from John Fairfax Publications Pty Ltd where he continues to work covering news for The Sydney Morning Herald, after a period of freelance for Fairfax mastheads and The Australian Financial Review. Over eight years, he contributed to these publications and others as well as the Associated Press and Australian Associated Press wire service in the area of news photography as well as undertaking editorial work for a number of magazines, some lifestyle-book photography for ABC Books and occasional corporate work.

Reid actively pursues his own photographic projects outside of his work photography and as well as the dry-dock project, he has documented the culture of wedding photography in The Rocks, Sydney in collaboration with photographer Glenn Campbell. He also photographs the cult following of the Newtown Jets rugby league team. His current (2008) series is exploring shape and colour in man-made and natural environments.
