Joel Sam was born on Thursday (Waiben) Island, in the Torres Straits. He gained a Diploma of Art in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Visual Arts, Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE in 2005. In 2010 his work was shown in the Multi-artist exhibition 'Contemporary prints by Brian Robinson and Joel Sam' by KickArts Contemporary Arts, Queensland.
