William Gould was born 1 May 1879 in Marrickville, New South Wales, to James Gould of Middlesex in England and Ann [nee Jones] of Glebe.
Able Seaman Gouuld embarked on SS SALAMIS on 8 August 1900 as part of the New South Wales Naval Contingent involved in the Boxer Rebellion in China. He returned aboard SS CHINGTU 25 April 1901.
In 1901 William married Eva Ann Lay in Marrickville.

The Gould family were long time residents, merchants and councilmen in the Marrickville / Petersham area. They had held various properties in the area since 1879 and William's father James had a buther shop. The family also had a produce busines titled 'Gould and Sons' and William's brother James was a long serving alderman, and mayor, on the Marrickville Council.

William died in 1966 and is buried in Sutherland, New South Wales.
