Martin MacGilivray

Australian, 1880 - 1938
BiographyBorn in 1880 in Balmain son of Daniel and Mary MacGilivray. Worked for Burns Philp & Co. shipping line as an engineer as did his father. He began his career with Burns Philp on the TITUS in 1902 as third engineer. He was appointed second engineer on the GUTHRIE in 1905 and promoted to Chief Engineer on the INDUNA in 1907. In 1915 he resigned to take up a shore position. From 1917 to 1928 he served with the Australian Commonwealth Line. He was back in the service of Burns Philp & Co. in the 1930s. He was sent to Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, in 1938 to take up the position of Chief Engineer of the MAIWARA, he died there later that year or early 1939. His effects were returned to his sister Margaret McGilivray [born 1883] in early February 1939.

Martin MacGilivray met his future wife Annette Mathilda Wilhelmina Lewis on the GUTHRIE in 1907 on which she was a passenger. They married in 1909 in Waterloo Sydney, their daughter Olivena [Olivene] MacGilivray was born in the same year. Annette MacGilivray died of breast cancer in 1916 and Olivene was raised by Annette's sisters. Olivene married Gordon J. McLean in 1934. The donor of the collection, Donald Mclean, is their son.
