Karumapuli Jacob Stengle1954

Karumapuli started drawing and painting from a very young age. His mother was a Ngurrindjeri woman whose country is the Coorong, a coastal area in South Australia. His father was a Czech-Slovenian and Karumapuli'a mixed heritage caused him to explore issues of racial and cultural identity, his own and in others, through his work. Karumapuli is known for his work in highlighting the issue of the Stolen Generation to wider public. He spent many years at the Colebrook Home for Aboriginal Children when he was placed there at the age of three when his mother died and the pain of this shared experience is embodied in his work 'Colebrook Home: The Stolen Generation'.

Karumapuli has worked in various mediums and utilizes a traditional European pictorial style to depict Ngarrindjeri creation stories, his own personal experiences and contemporary reflections on Indigenous Australian history.
