Stephen Winkworth Silver and Co primary early business was as outfitters for the British army and colonial service. The company also outfitted emigrants and the growing travel trade, supplying high quality portable furniture and other luxury camping equipment. With the discovery of waterproofing clothing and Gutta Percha, SW Silver and Co expanded their business substantially. It grew to incorporate not just all conceivable travel needs but now also wiring and cabling, including submarine cables. The company also impacted the sporting goods market becoming notable for their golf balls.
Despite their success in other ventures SW Silver and Co remained notable for its travel range. The company had a particular focus on the Australian and New Zealand immigration route with representatives in each country they were well stocked to also supply gold rush hopefuls.
