BiographyAnchor Kulunba was for many years the senior custodian of Mumeka outstation and of the fish trapping activities on Bulkay Creek.Kulunba was the sole maker of mandjabu, the traditional large woven fish traps that was used to trap barramundi at Bulkay Creek. Kulunba controlled this significant activity and passed the skills of making and setting the trap to his sons. After the Maningrida Arts cooperative was established in the 1980s, a number of art advisers recognised the skills involved in Kuluba’s weaving process and encouraged him to sell his traps on the art market.
Kulunba’s traps were often included in group exhibitions of woven and twined artefacts. His wife was fellow artist Mary Marabamba and he was the father of Susan Marawarr, John Mawurndjul, Jimmy Njiminjuma and James Iyuna.
