Lieutenant John Shillibeer

British, 1786 - 1841
BiographyJohn Shillibeer born in Devon, England, in 1786. In 1804 he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Marines. In 1805 he participated in the Battle of Trafalgar. In 1807 he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant. In December 1813 he was assigned to HMS BRITON under the command of Captain Thomas Staines and sailed for the Pacific Ocean returning to England in July 1815. His notes and drawings from this voyage were the basis for his book 'A Narrative of the Briton's Voyage, to Pitcairn's Island' published in soon after his return. He retired from military life becoming a parson and teacher, dying in 1841.
