Tjaparti Bates

1932-2016
BiographyBorn in Yinunmaru, east Gibson Desert and lived at Warburton. She is one of the leading elder women who has documented the Law of the Ngaanyatjarra.

Tjaparti Bates is an artist based in Warakurna, Wanarn, and Warburton communities in the Gibson Desert. Known to be active from 1991, her work incorporates media of paint, canvas, glass and felt, and is particularly centred around interpretations of Tjukurrpa from her mother and father.

Tjaparti won numerous awards for her work, including the 1999 National Indigenous Art Award.
