John Rowland Barker

British, 1911 - 1959
BiographyKraber was the trademark used by British artist John Roland Barker. He served an apprenticeship with his father's decorating firm in Leicester and studied art in the evenings. Barker won an International Travelling School award for decoration and studied painting and mural decoration in Italy, Vienna and Paris. He later spent four months in Hungary with a view to becoming a poster artist. In London he worked as a freelancer for London Transport, Shell Mex, the General Post Office, the Orient Line, Ministry of Labour, and HMV. His poster work was characterised by the use of photo montages, combining bold graphics with photographs (a style also employed by Australian artist Douglas Annand).
