The Blue Funnel Line was established by Alfred Holt and Thomas Ainsworth in 1952, and incorporated the Ocean Steamship Company; Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij 'Ocean'; East Indian Ocean Steam Ship Company; and China Mutual Steam Navigation Company.
The company had a signature blue funnel with a black top, and each of the ships had names taken from Homer's Odyssey.
