Negretti and Zambra Limited

Enrico (Henry) Angelo Ludovico Negretti (1818-1879) and Joseph Warren Zambra (1822-1897) were Italian instrument makers who formed the company of Negretti and Zambra in London in 1850 as philosophical instrument makers. In 1851, they exhibited a variety of instruments, including a pelorus, as the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace and received the only prize medal for meteorological equipment. They were subsequently appointed Meteorological Instrument Makers to the Queen.

Negretti and Zambra became the most prolific and leading makers on meteorological instruments during the second half of the nineteenth century. Succeeding generations of both families remained involved in the company, until 1981. The business still continues, as scientific instrument makers, under the name of Negretti Automation Ltd at Aylesbury, Bucks, England.
