Astle Scott Littlejohns (1873-1939)

BiographyLittlejohns entered the Royal Navy training ship BRITTANNIA in 1886. After completion, he served as midshipman aboard ORLANDO, OPAL, HIMALAYA and HOWE. Littlejohns was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June 1894.

Seemingly unable to impress his superiors, Littlejohns resigned in February 1902 and was placed on the Emergency List. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in June 1902 and called up at the outbreak of WWI. In 1914, Littlejohns commanded armoured trains in Europe and was slightly wounded. He was noted for his success during this time and was promoted to the rank of Commander (emergency) in April 1915. In June the following year, he was invalided from active duty and in March 1919, Littlejohns was promoted to the rank of Captain (emergency) with seniority of 11 November 1918 in recognition of services rendered during the war.

In early 1920, Littlejohns took over as Naval Advisor to the Australian High Commissioner in London and the Australian Commonwealth Naval Board from Rear Admiral Haworth-Booth. He had been Haworth-Booth's assistant since early 1918 and was now responsible for the training of RAN personnel in Australia, especially in light of the delivery of six destroyers from Britain.
