John Bastock1908 - 1996

John Bastock was born at Glebe in 1908 and joined the naval training ship TINGIRA at the age of 15. He undertook employment with the NSW Public Works Department and the Electricity Commission. Bastock had a keen interest in maritime and naval subjects and published illustrated articles in many maritime journals. He also wrote the popular reference books 'Australia's Ships of War' (1975) and 'Ships on the Australia Station' (1990). In his later years Bastock was a naval artist and often donated his ship portraits to the Navy. He died on 26 July 1996.
