DescriptionThis wooden carving was produced to commemorate Admiral Lord Nelson, and features HMS VICTORY on the left, the bust of Nelson in the centre and possibly the World War II battleship HMS NELSON on the right. The centre piece is surmounted by a naval crown and the centre bottom has a framed copy of a handwritten letter by Nelson dated to 1782.HistoryOn 21 October 1805, the Battle of Trafalgar was fought off the south-west coast of Spain. It turned the tide against the French Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte's threatened invasion of England. Under the command of Nelson, the British Fleet defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets - but it came at a high price when Nelson was fatally shot. The British battleship HMS NELSON was commissioned in 1930, and named in honour of Nelson. She served during World War II in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Indian oceans and in 1949 was decommissioned and scrapped.SignificanceThis wooden carving is an example of the significance of the legend of the naval hero Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson.
